The Campfire

Since the dawn of time, mankind has spent countless hours gathered around a campfire. At first it was a means for survival, to keep warm, cook food, and to keep from becoming food themselves. Through tthe ages, even as our technology improved, humans can’t help but to be drawn to a campfire. More often than not, the mood is more celebratory with music and laughter ringing out into the darkness. Still, even today, serious matters continue to be hashed out around a fire. Plans for the next day’s hunt may be discussed, agreements reached, differences settled, and so on. Sometimes it’s a serious deliberation on an age old question that has baffled generations: Ginger or Mary Ann?

I’ve spent many a night around a campfire myself, often surrounded by friends and family but every so alone, watching the flames dance and my mind wanders until the fire dies down to a few glowing embers. My original idea was to name this after something from my books. But then it occured to me that the people of Hammond’s Corners would spend a considerable time around a campfire themselves

I’ll explain a little more what I’m doing and why HERE. But the short answer is, my vision for this is to be a place where we get back to basics. A place where you and I can connect in a meaningful way which has become difficult on social media.

There’s no mosquitos, the fire is stoked, and the drinks are cold. Welcome to The Campfire.

  1. This will sound strange but I don’t ever remember sitting around a campfire with friends, family or anyone. It sounds very relaxing though.

  2. This sounds great! And I notice that unusual for me, the smoke isn’t right in my face at this campfire!

  3. I spent many days and nights around a campfire when I lived in Maine. As you stated, there are many occasions for being around a campfire.
